What is Iboga?
Iboga refers to a psychoactive compound taken from plants that contain the ibogaine
alkaloid. In Gabón alone there are numerous plants that contain this alkaloid. The main
source however, is the Tabernanthe Iboga plant. These plants grow on the jungle floor
in remote regions of West Central Africa including Cameroon, the Republic of Congo,
Angola, Gana, and of course, Gabón. As of recently this includes other countries as well. The plant’s root bark after proper cultivation, contains psychoactive alkaloids and more healing properties yet to be discovered. By shaving 16-20% of this root bark after five to six years from the mother plant, we obtain fresh organic, ready to ingest, powerful and ancient, healing iboga. After consuming this root bark via one two ways – spoonfuls mixed with organic honey or vegan capsules, people experience the onset of a dream-like mode of limitless consciousness. During the course of the journey, one may encounter existential discoveries of healing on all levels – physically or mentally or spiritually. What is common is crystal clear visions of one’s past, memory recollection, and countless other infinitely mesmerizing possibilities. Iboga has infinite capabilities of addressing any ailment known to mankind.
What is the history of Iboga in Africa?
Since the early 19th century, Iboga has been revered as the foundational sacrament of the Bwiti culture. They consider it the gatekeeper to the realm of spirits, and a master medicine for the mind, body and soul. However, before the emergence of Bwiti, it was the pygmies of the deep jungle who first discovered the plant’s powers. Archaeological evidence has shown iboga use by humans stretches back over two millennia. Although the true tale of how humans came to learn of the plant’s powers is lost to history, the subsequent myths that have emerged in its place are fascinating. As with all orally- based traditions, the varying Bwiti iboga stories differ depending on which sect is telling the story.
Iboga has been extensively praised as a powerful aid to personal therapy. However, in the west, it is more widely recognized as a catalyst for addiction interruption. When taken by individuals looking to kick addictive substances, especially opioids, it acts to calm, if not completely eliminate, the symptoms of addiction withdrawal. The result is a much less painful detoxification process than going cold turkey. Iboga is the only substance we are aware of that is able to deliver such mysterious effects. How it achieves this is unknown. The truth is, science cannot explain the absolute capabilities of Iboga.
